Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity
DePaul’s commitment to
diversity was evident in everything the team saw and heard. The Office of
Institutional Diversity is one of DePaul’s greatest strengths. It has
accomplished much over the past 10 years, but realizes that there is still much
to do.
– North Central Association of Colleges & Schools Evaluation Team
The Office of Institutional Diversity & Equity (OIDE) was
created in 1997 to create a more inclusive climate and culture at DePaul
University particularly for people of color and women throughout the University.
The Catholic, Vincentian and Urban characteristics of DePaul urge us beyond mere
toleration of the other to a genuine respect that moves towards critical
conversations and meaningful celebrations around diversity.
The OIDE advocates for individuals and groups by developing strategies for
recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty and staff and student body. The OIDE
educates by sponsoring cultural and religious programming and outreach
activities. OIDE staff train on legal and internal diversity and sexual
discrimination policy compliance, and investigators resolve complaints related
to discrimination and harassment through both formal processes and alternative
dispute resolution sessions pursuant to the Anti-discriminatory Harassment, the
Sexual Harassment, and Americans with Disabilities Act policies and procedures.
The OIDE mission is ambitious, but it is integral to the larger Vincentian
mission of the University that animates and holds the University Community
together. The OIDE is commissioned to make sure that we approach and do not
withdraw from the demands and opportunities racial, ethnic, cultural, and
religious diversity challenges and offers.
